Bocas del Toro ? Panama
The charm of Bocas del Toro is undoubtedly wrapped up in the people who call it home. From the indigenous peoples in the province of Boca del Toro who are attempting to cling to their cultural and ancestral lands, to the eclectic mix of men and women who have moved there and brought their culture with them, the whole area exudes a funky, laid-back feel. The most famous area in the province is the Archipelago of Bocas del Toro; with its luxurious rain forests, sunny islands, and beautiful beaches it also attracts the most tourists. Throughout the area you can find a number of places to enjoy amazing coral reefs seen through crystal clear water, running right up along perfectly white sandy beaches. Exploring inland there are dense forests that lead to eerie mangrove islets revealing scenery that is reminiscent of a northern lake. The exotic wildlife that inhabits the barely explored mountains and rivers allows visitors to get a look at some interesting animals that are only found in this part of the world. Four species of endangered sea turtles lay their eggs on the shores of the Bocas del Toro Archipelago, and the red-billed tropic bird can only be found on one island in the entire chain. Altogether 350 species of birds either live or migrate to this region. Other native animals to the area include sloths, dolphins, frogs, caimans, and many tropical fish.
Today, as the area gains more and more international attention, locals are trying to preserve the atmosphere that makes Bocas del Toro so special. To that end the Guaymi Indian villages and a National Marine Park work to protect several of the prevalent ecosystems and natural resources that coexist within the boundaries of the Archipelago. Locals also keep the charm of the area alive with their colorful personalities, Caribbean architecture, local cuisine, and customary festivities.
The two most popular beaches in Bocas del Toro are Bocas del Drago and Bluff Beach. On opposite sides of Bocas del Toro, they each offer something different, Bluff Beach being a favorite of surfers from all over the world. Throughout the province, visitors can enjoy incredible sights, many of them within the Parque Internacional la Amistad (Friendship National Park) and the wetlands of San San Pondsack. Despite the increase in tourism, there are still plenty of undiscovered areas in Bocas del Toro, the perfect place of exploration for those looking for abounding, untouched natural beauty.
